E-commerce is a cut throat business. You have to arm yourself with the proper know-how and the tools to make your site a cut above the rest. Each day, more and more sites are clambering to optimize their rankings in websites and if you lose your guard, you may just get trampled on and be left in the abyss filled with so many failed e-commerce sites.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is a term widely used today by many e-commerce sites.  For the past few years and the next ten years or so, search engines would be the most widely used internet tool to find the sites that they need to go to or the product or information they need.

Most people that use search engines use only the ten top search results in the first page. Making it to the first page, more so to the top three is a barometer of a sites success in search engine optimization. You will get a higher ratio of probability in being clicked on when you rank high. The more traffic for your site, the more business you rake in.

But, it is essential to grab a hold of that spot or make your ranking even better. As I aforementioned, each day is a new day for all e-commerce sites to make them selves rank higher using search engine optimization. It is imperative to make your site better and better everyday.

So just what is search engine optimization and do you have to use it? The answer to why you have to use it is an easy one. You need search engine optimization to be number one, or maybe at least make your site income generating.

With search engine optimization you can get the benefit of generating a high traffic volume. Let’s just say you get only a turn out of successful sales with 10 to 20 percent of your traffic. If you get a hundred hits or more a day, you get a good turn out of sales already. If you get only twenty to ten hits a day, you only get one or two if not any at all.

So once again, what is search engine optimization? Search engine optimization is utilizing tools and methods in making your site top ranking in the results of search engines. Getting yourself in the first page and better yet in the top half of the page will ensure that your site will generate public awareness of your site’s existence and subsequently generate more traffic, traffic that could lead to potential income and business.

Search engine optimization requires a lot of work to be fully realized. There are many aspects you have to change in your site or add as well to get search engine optimization. These will include getting lots of information about the keyword phrases that are popular in regards to your sites niche or theme.

You may also need to rewrite your sites contents so that you could get the right keyword phrases in your site without making it too commercial but light and informative. There are certain rules and guidelines to be followed with making your site’s content applicable and conducive to search engine optimization.

You will also need to collaborate with many other sites so that you could get link exchanges and page transfers. The more inbound and outbound traffics generated by sites among others are one of the components search engines uses to rank sites.

Try to search the internet for many useful help. Tips, guidelines and methods for search engine optimization are plenty to be found. Read many articles that can help you optimize your site in search engine results. The more knowledge and information you gather the better. This will all help you in getting those high rankings. This may require a little time and effort in your part but the benefits will be astounding.

If you can part with some money, there are many sites in the internet that can help you in search engine optimization. There are many sites that help in tracking keyword phrases that can help your site. There are also some content writers that have lots of experience in making good keyword laden content for your sites that have good quality.

How’s your business going to keep growing with the holidays just around the corner? What can you do when most people don’t want to spend money now?

If you are concerned the cash flow won’t flow and you won’t have enough income for the next months, check out these ten tips:

1. Create written copy to email your subscribers and other email lists.

Just for your faithful customers, send a free how-to report, a thoughtful poem to celebrate the holidays, or a free offer of answering a question via email. This action keeps your name out in front of your audience, and it makes them feel acknowledged.

2. Create a form letter to send by email to your potential clients.

It reminds them you are available for them if they are ready to make a decision. Sample: “Dear name or group, Just wondering if this is the time for you to begin action on your book, internet marketing or web project? As you know I work with small business people who want to write, publish and sell their books, that will make a difference in others’ lives, become the savvy expert and household name, and build business profits consistently.” Follow with a special offer like a half hour phone session, or your free ezine or articles. Send it during and after the holiday.

3. Organize your computer files to locate the gold.

Perhaps you’ll find an unfinished article that you can edit and send to the opt-in (no spam) ezines or top web sites in your field. These articles placed your coach #1 in Google and other search engines as well as listing her web site URL on 12,800 sites up 1200 from just last week. This is a good time to delete what no longer serves you.

4. Offer a strategic alliance with top people in your field.

This can take the form of exchanging tips for ezines, exchanging web links, or even promotional copy to add to your site called, “Professional Resources.” When I did this with a large company’s ezine of 30,000 subscribers, I received back a spot where my monthly column sits–with a different how to article each time. Just another way to get yourself out there.

5. Hire a part-time organizer-computer assistant.

Call your local high school and place an ad for their career center. It’s minimum wage usually, and you can double, even triple your business results with just a little help. If you don’t promote each day, you lose your momentum and potential buyer’s responses. You can do the creating, your assistant can send the emails out, clean up your files, and do web marketing.

6. Send out an email survey to discover what’s on your potential customer’s or client’s minds.

Ask them what is the number one question they would like to have you answer for them. Then compile the questions and answers. Leverage them to place on your web site, place a few in several ezines to add new content, send out as article for the opt-in ezines or for web sites, or exchange with strategic partners.

7. Take some time off.

Renew yourself with a walk to hear the birds, see the green and enjoy the smells. On my walks I take a big whiff of Starbucks coffee aromas as I pass by to my local lake. Check out nearby places such as a spa, hot mineral springs, or gardens to be silent. Include more yoga in your day.

8. Get your expenses tallied before tax season.

See what else you can do to get more deductions before the year’s end.

9. Stop spending time on things you don’t enjoy.

Say, “I let go of all that doesn’t serve me.” Look over your daily to do pages, and instead of dashing from one thing to another, list just 3 High Level Activities you want to accomplish for each day. The trick is to finish them before you wander to another lesser priority.

10. Make promotion and marketing part of your daily life.

Doing a little each day does bring great rewards. You may not get to pick the time someone uses your service or product, but ongoing promotion does work. Just found an email from one year ago from a potential client. Today he is with me as a full on client.

These tips are just the beginning. Put an easy attitude on as your build your business even during the holidays. Then, reward yourself with quality time with friends and family.

What To Do When Your IT Project Is Late, Over Budget, and Looks Like It’s Never Going To Work

Here’s a scary statistic. According to four prominent research firms, only around 20% of all IT projects are finished in a timely manner. By “timely” the researchers mean without loss of quality or being over budget. They go on to say the average project runs approximately 200 percent late, roughly 200 percent over budget, and contains only 2/3 of the original functionality.

Failure is the norm in the IT industry. But why? And more importantly, how do we fix it?

There must be a way to dissect the problem, and create a solution to the diagnosis of “doomed failure.” Trust me, there is!

Top 7 Problems and Their Solutions

Let’s take a look at the top 7 reasons IT projects are late or over budget. Then I’ll show you some proven solutions taken straight from the trenches.

1. Not Enough Time

Whether it’s a misunderstanding of the complexity of computer system designs or some other reason, many times little time is devoted to gathering the necessary data. Because this is one of the first steps in the process, when adequate time isn’t given to data collection, everything else suffers.

Likewise, enough time is rarely allotted to creating a good design. While the planning stage may not offer the excitement that development does, it is equally, if not more, important. Lack of planning in the design phase almost always leads to ongoing changes during the development phase. When this happens, budget dollars and man-hours are eaten away.

SOLUTION: Give it more time. This vital step must be given due consideration. Adjust your schedule as needed, and you’ll find the rest of the process goes much smoother. Yes, you have to make it to market before your competition. But if you make it to market and your product is filled with bugs, what do you get? A pile of returns and complaints, and a bad reputation.

2. Open the Lines of Communication

It sounds like a cliché, but communication is absolutely vital to the success of any project. The communication between the development team and the users, and also the communication inside the development team must be crystal clear. Does everyone understand you? Do they know exactly what’s expected of them or have you assumed they know? Do they communicate well with each other? With users? With other departments?

SOLUTION: Identify communication breakdowns now. These can only lead to confusion and complications down the road. Never assume that everyone understands. Take just a little extra time to create an environment that is destined to produce a product on time and under budget.

3. Testing a New Program in the Production Server

Testing in the production server leads to a breach of security, which can lead to “immediate” release without testing which can ultimately disrupt the production environment.

SOLUTION: There should be specific protocol setup for security and quality control considerations for new program tests.

4. Inadequate Testing

Experience and studies show that testing is almost always pushed to the end of the development cycle. Since the development is usually bad, the testers run out of time. The result? Running over schedule and over budget. Not to mention the release of an inadequate product.

SOLUTION: Remember problem #1? Ditto! Yes, you have to make it to market before your competition. But if you make it to market and your product is filled with bugs, what do you get? A pile of returns and complaints, and a bad reputation. Test all the way through the process, and you’ll save a lot of time in the end.

5. Pressing the Budget Too Tight

When you have unrealistic goals for a project’s budget to start with, chaos is bound to set in. Departments fall behind, resources are slow to arrive, and – because of budget constraints – the project, once again, runs off the road.

SOLUTION: Create an accurate budget. Also, outline ways to develop better upfront planning of the resources.

6. Never/Rarely Checking the Progress of the Project

As the project goes along, the unexpected happens. Various people implement their ideas as to how to fix these challenges and – when launch day comes – you’re surprised with an entire list of challenges that need your immediate attention.

SOLUTION: Define “checkpoints” throughout the project. Give attention to those things that need to be adjusted along the way, even if they cause minor delays. Fixing them now, rather than later, will take less time overall.

7. Not Reviewing Existing Standards

Do most or all of your projects run late and over budget? Do you keep the same standards in place time after time? How’s that working for you? If you keep doing what you’re doing, you’ll keep getting what you get. Let’s face it… things change, and if you want to keep pace, you have to change, too.

SOLUTION: Take time to review the standards used for each and every project. Keep a running list of what worked, what didn’t, and how to do it better next time.

The next time your IT project is late, over budget, and looks like it is never going to work, review this list again. Make the necessary adjustments, and you’ll be downright amazed at the difference!

Where Business Ideas Come From

I was reading the local paper and came across a picture of the cleanest garage I ever saw. In addition to a picture of the garage there was a picture of a gentlemen, in his late 60’s cleaning the cobwebs with an extension pole. I thought to myself I have never seen a garage so clean in my life. The accompanying article was discussing how this individual and another had painted and put cabinets in their garages, and how you could eat off this garage floor.

Now we have all seen those storage cabinets for garages, but how many of us ever get them and if we do, don’t we fill them up and then the garage goes back to looking like it did before we got them. Imagine if someone would come to your home, condo or townhouse and clean out, paint and organize that garage for you; and you would tell them how you want it done. I am not talking about those expensive ads we’ve all seen where they can come in and re-do your garage. Not many of us have thousands of dollars to spend on our garages.

It got me to thinking that this could be the perfect business for someone who loves to clean and organize. You could network with one of the local home depot places to provide you cabinets, or you could take your re-sale number and purchase them directly from the manufacturer, rather than dealing with a local company. The only negative sometimes with dealing directly with the manufacturer, you might have to purchase larger quantities or they might have minimum order requirements.

You could run small classified ads in your local paper, in specialty papers in your area or make up flyers with a before and after picture of what you could do with someone’s garage. You’d meet with the homeowner and discuss where certain items would be placed, inform them of your services: painting and providing cabinets and then re-organizing the garage for them. If it were me I would certainly get half of my fee up front (which would also include the cost of the cabinets).

Like the article I read, get your local paper to feature your business. Show them a before and after picture. It would certainly be a great way to get you more business. Remember a picture is worth a thousand words.

What should you charge. I really don’t know. However, if I were thinking about starting this business I’d call homeowners and ask them what they would pay. Tell homeowners you are doing a survey and just want to know if they would be interested if someone would paint, and re-organize their garage, and if so, what would it be worth to them. You would also have to find out the cost of the cabinets beforehand so that you could factor this into your cost; in addition to how much paint you would need for the average garage. You would obviously want a paint that is easy to clean. The biggest thing is to decide how much time it would take and what you want to make per hour. If it were me, I would do it on a sliding scale. By this, I mean it would depend on how much work the garage needed.

You could also do quarterly, or semi-annual follow-up for webs and washing of the walls and floors and do any re-organizing.

I might be way out of line, maybe somebody is already doing it. Again, I don’t mean the redesigning and remodeling companies we’ve all seen, I mean a small or homebased business owner.

Anyway, it was just a thought! It gives those of you that think there is no type of business you can run an idea of how some business ideas come about. Think about what you like to do, what your passionate about, and see if you can develop a business around your interests.

What Is Your Investment Style?

Knowing what your risk tolerance and investment style are will help you choose investments more wisely. While there are many different types of investments that one can make, there are really only three specific investment styles – and those three styles tie in with your risk tolerance. The three investment styles are conservative, moderate, and aggressive.

Naturally, if you find that you have a low tolerance for risk, your investment style will most likely be conservative or moderate at best. If you have a high tolerance for risk, you will most likely be a moderate or aggressive investor. At the same time, your financial goals will also determine what style of investing you use.

If you are saving for retirement in your early twenties, you should use a conservative or moderate style of investing – but if you are trying to get together the funds to buy a home in the next year or two, you would want to use an aggressive style.

Conservative investors want to maintain their initial investment. In other words, if they invest $5000 they want to be sure that they will get their initial $5000 back. This type of investor usually invests in common stocks and bonds and short term money market accounts.

An interest earning savings account is very common for conservative investors.
A moderate investor usually invests much like a conservative investor, but will use a portion of their investment funds for higher risk investments. Many moderate investors invest 50% of their investment funds in safe or conservative investments, and invest the remainder in riskier investments.

An aggressive investor is willing to take risks that other investors won’t take. They invest higher amounts of money in riskier ventures in the hopes of achieving larger returns – either over time or in a short amount of time. Aggressive investors often have all or most of their investment funds tied up in the stock market.

The Importance of Diversification

“Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket!” You’ve probably heard that over and over again throughout your life…and when it comes to investing, it is very true. Diversification is the key to successful investing. All successful investors build portfolios that are widely diversified, and you should too!

Diversifying your investments might include purchasing various stocks in many different industries. It may include purchasing bonds, investing in money market accounts, or even in some real property. The key is to invest in several different areas – not just one.

Over time, research has shown that investors who have diversified portfolios usually see more consistent and stable returns on their investments than those who just invest in one thing. By investing in several different markets, you will actually be at less risk also.

For instance, if you have invested all of your money in one stock, and that stock takes a significant plunge, you will most likely find that you have lost all of your money. On the other hand, if you have invested in ten different stocks, and nine are doing well while one plunges, you are still in reasonably good shape.

A good diversification will usually include stocks, bonds, real property, and cash. It may take time to diversify your portfolio. Depending on how much you have to initially invest, you may have to start with one type of investment, and invest in other areas as time goes by.

This is okay, but if you can divide your initial investment funds among various types of investments, you will find that you have a lower risk of losing your money, and over time, you will see better returns.

Experts also suggest that you spread your investment money evenly among your investments. In other words, if you start with $100,000 to invest, invest $25,000 in stocks, $25,000 in real property, $25,000 in bonds, and put $25,000 in an interest bearing savings account.
